Lafayette sits in south-eastern Boulder County, founded in 1888 by Mary Miller on land from her family farm and named for her late husband. Coal built it. Mining declined from the 1930s through the 1950s as natural gas took over, and the Black Diamond, the town's last mine, closed in 1956.
